Basic Grow Tent Setup

Setting up an indoor cannabis grow requires creating a controlled environment that mimics natural sunlight and airflow. The most basic supplies include a grow space, proper lighting, ventilation, and a growing medium.

This post is intended to provide an introduction to the layout and basic equipment for a small indoor grow tent setup. It is important to note that there are other ways to grow cannabis that will require additional supplies. Once you get a couple of grows under your belt you can explore the other ways to grow cannabis.

Grow Space & Structure

  • Grow Tent: A light-proof, reflective Mylar tent (e.g., 2’x2’ to 4’x4’) is the most popular choice for beginners to control light, temperature, and odor.

  • Containers/Pots: Fabric pots (3-5 gallon) are recommended over plastic because they allow better root aeration and prevent roots from circling, often referred to as “air pruning”.

  • Trellis Netting: Used to support heavy buds and create a flat, even canopy to maximize light usage.

Lighting and Electricity

  • LED Grow Lights: Full-spectrum LED lights are the industry standard for indoor growing, offering high efficiency, low heat output, and longevity.

  • Timer: A mechanical or digital timer is essential to automate the light cycle (18 hours on/6 hours off for veg; 12/12 for flower).

  • Power Strip: A heavy-duty power strip, ideally with surge protection.

Ventilation & Environment Control

  • Inline Exhaust Fan & Ducting: Removes hot, stale air and pulls in fresh air, vital for managing heat and humidity.

  • Carbon Filter: Attaches to the exhaust fan to scrub the air and eliminate strong odors.

  • Oscillating Fan: A small fan placed inside the tent to move air around, strengthening stems and preventing mold.

  • Thermo-Hygrometer: A device that measures temperature and humidity, crucial for monitoring the environment.

  • Humidifier/Dehumidifier: Used to adjust humidity levels based on the growth stage (higher for seedlings, lower for flowering).

Growing Medium & Nutrients

  • Growing Medium:

    • Soil: Best for beginners due to its forgiving nature.

    • Coco Coir: A fast-growing soilless medium that offers great aeration.

  • Nutrients: Cannabis-specific nutrients formulated for vegetative (high Nitrogen) and flowering (high Phosphorus/Potassium) stages.

  • pH Meter & pH Up/Down Solutions: Essential for ensuring the plant can absorb nutrients (6.0–7.0 for soil, 5.5–6.5 for coco).

Tools & Maintenance

  • Trimming Scissors/Shears: Sharp, small-tipped scissors for pruning and harvesting.

  • Watering Can/Pump Sprayer: For precise watering and applying foliar feeds.

  • Magnifier/Jeweler’s Loupe: To check trichome maturity for harvest timing.

  • Sticky Traps: To monitor for and catch pests.

For beginners, purchasing an all-in-one grow tent kit that includes a tent, light, fan, and filter is often the most cost-effective and convenient method.

Happy Growing!

Thanks man,

I remember, when I started growing, how hard it was to get updated information about growing cannabis.

Love it, setting up your first grow space is so exciting..
And doing it correctly will help ensure a successful grow.

It’s always so exciting to build up a new grow space :rocket::rocket::rocket:

I always tell folks get enviroment first everything else second

Yep environment perfect ish everything will follow

Absolutely correct :100:, environmental control.. probably the hardest part.
If the conditions are poor, the plants will reflect

My first attempt had foil cupboard,600w hps and a foil tray to sit solo cup with sprouted bean…god, when a think back,a wish there was something like this back then…I,m laughing as a write this thinking I was a quality gardener..but I did,nt give up…you cant beat yer own med…
