Hydroponic Cannabis: Mold Identification & Prevention

Finding mold in your grow can be scary, but it’s easy to manage if you know what to look for. Think of mold like a “silent intruder” that loves wet, still, and dark places.

1. The Three Main Villains

Type Where it hides What it looks like

Bud Rot Inside the flowers Gray fuzz or brown “mush” inside the buds.

Powdery Mildew On top of leaves A light dusting of white flour or powdered sugar.

Root Rot In the water tank Slimy, brown, smelly roots (they should be white).

2. Why does it happen?

Mold grows in hydroponics for three simple reasons:

Too Wet: The air is too humid (above 60%).

Too Still: There isn’t enough wind moving the leaves.

Too Hot: The water or air is too warm, which germs love.

3. How to stop it (The “Clean & Clear” Rule)

Airflow: Keep fans blowing constantly. If the leaves aren’t dancing slightly, there isn’t enough air.

Light-Proof: Make sure no light gets into your water tank. Light + Water = Mold and Algae.

Oxygen: Use “air stones” (bubbles) in your water. Mold hates bubbles and oxygen.

Cleanliness: Always wash your hands before touching your plants.

4. If you see mold…

Don’t panic.

Cut it out: Carefully cut off the moldy part and put it in a bag immediately so spores don’t fly everywhere.

Clean your tools: Wipe your scissors with alcohol before touching a healthy plant.

Throw it away: Never smoke moldy buds—it can make you very sick.

The “White Paper Test” and Visual Comparison

You can perform a quick check by placing a bud on white paper and gently tapping it.

  • Trichomes: These are tiny, glassy, mushroom-like structures. When they fall onto paper, they look like shimmering crystals or “kief” and are often sticky.

  • Mold/Mildew: This will transfer as a dry, powdery residue or fine dust onto the paper, lacking the sparkle of resin glands.

Dat mold ain’t no joke.. be vigilant in your inspections, the sooner you discover, the better chance of success and recovery.
Left unchecked, it could spread to other plants..and possibly destroy all that you have worked so hard to achieve.
And that is a bad thing
