Concerned about neighbors driveway lights. Please reply/help me decide if there’s a problem.
I have the most wonderful soil and big raised bed for my photo period plants and being my first grow am learning so very much from books, other reading and you wonderful folks. Thank you! My neighbor, 100 yards away across road has driveway lights turning night in his drive into day shedding some fair degree of light onto my garden. Is this a real problem for photo period bud production? Should I place a cover over my area at night (not preferred), place them elsewhere? Or is this over worry? I will be grateful for replies. Thank you!
Take a Pic at night show us what u working with
I put up screen, I got from lowe’s and it blocks light perfectly… I had the same problem. It definitely affects the plants, mine hermed out.
Nah, indoors you can maximize the environment to perfect conditions. Can’t do that outdoors. When the weather starts to change a and it gets cold, people who are growing indoors don’t worry about it. Unless you live in Spain or Emerald triangle.
Thank you forever folks! I’ll take that pic tonight (a.m.). Hoping phone & iPad will do it Justice. But after reading helpful responses, I’m thinking my fears were correct and I’m having to move location sadly. But I’ll send and we’ll see. But ever thankful!
I’d love to be a founder but the steps dont seem at all clear. To bad, but first grow is becoming a challenge enough!
My thoughts as well. A little more info goes a long ways,
Welcome aboard.
I should think you’ll be fine mukka! It doesn’t look like its any brighter than the moon ![]()
I appreciate you can’t always tell from a photo, but the inverse square law means that very few photons from that will be hitting your plant and making it think there is daylight about.
Ya I think ull be fine buddy. However if u can afford to by a canvas of some sort to block it at night go for it. But I don’t think ull need it.
Thanks to everyone. I’m feeling less stress because of y’all. It’s such wonderful soil in that raised bed growing 7’ tall tomatoes with tons of fruit. I’ll give it a go again with some old doubled sheets or better yet, some Camo screening at night.
You’ll be okay as long as the strain you are growing isn’t prone to hermie. I agree it’s no brighter than the moon light.
While I can appreciate the concern, if you have a light meter, that will help to clarify things. It may really be bright to our eyes, how much of your plant “sees it”?? Is it really brighter than a full-moon? That question may help to dismiss this light as a problem.
IDK, I mean if you grab your par meter and move it off from your light around 3 ft, how much does it drop. Compare that to to the distance from the porch/street lights to your plants. How much par/ light do you think they are getting? Probably not a lot.
I agree with you on this! Why??? .. because one time I was adding shade screens to my windows, the kind that block 90% of the light. So me… I took out my light meter .. just to see.. and while my room still seemed bright enough to function, I really lost 90% of the light reading. Now with the human eyes.. our eyes dilate to see better under low light, while the light may not actually be that bright. So plants may not be as sensitive to light as our eyes are.
Very experienced growers (like yourselves) on the majority say the same. I should be ok and just to be sure, add a blind at night to remove in morning. Usually think of everything but (laughing) never once considered comparing to moonlight. Great point!!
Couldn’t have said it better
Thank you as probably correct! But decided to get a barrier for night on the teepees w/paracord lines and down in morning. Man, held up my palm skin shining! Your idea of comparison with the moon was spot on!
Don’t stress about it too much when out side there r times u just have to go with it. I bet ull be good is sound like ur blocking ot up well
