Re building the grow room

The battle of the stinky glue:nauseated_face::zombie:

This is some sticky, smelly, messy stuff.

We wore gloves :gloves: and had to keep changing them, I glued my hand to the notched trowel , but it went well and it’s done :+1:.

We’ll be adding baseboards, but first :1st_place_medal:, the new hydro system needs to be laid out,

It will be enclosed in a lower cabinet that we’ll custom build with removable panels for maintenance and cleaning.

The pots will be wrapped in insulation, and this should aid in keeping them cool.

Sunday afternoon, been a hot  day, that’s for sure. Grow room is holding :+1::tada: going to lay out the hydro system and see what we still need :mechanic::factory_worker:

Morning :victory_hand:t2: Have you already tried it with the lamps on at maximum power?

That’s going to be today or tomorrow, got 1 light up yesterday, :+1:

And through the darkness, a voice was heard, “LET THERE BE LIGHT” And there was light! So much light, I need my sunglasses :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: :+1:.

I’ve yet to run the light test, (PAR) but, you got what ya got :+1: it will still be useful for determining the height of the lights, I normally just go, eehhh looks good :100:

My camera always has those black bars in it when I get close to the big lights. I thought I might need that cow light on the floor, cow light? Yeah, the utter one:joy:, but I don’t think so. Time will tell :twelve_o_clock:, perhaps a mother in-law suit is in order  or another areoponic pot:thinking:

The two areoponic pots :honey_pot: will be powered by the BestVA SPF 2000s, one each. nice little light with built in cooling fans. The 4 hydro pots :pot_of_food: will use the 2 Schlutz 4x5 630 watt bad boys.

We’ll have a PAR number next month, gots to gets a meter, but for now, back to the assembly.

I stopped by our local store and they didn’t have any 2 inch O rings, so it’s off to the city, sometime soon :soon_arrow: :potted_plant: :potted_plant:

Aside from continuing the build of the pots, still waiting on a few pumps and float valves, we will run a day time heat check :white_check_mark: . I’m not worried about it tho:crossed_fingers::+1: it’s designed to work, so it should :joy: if it warms up, we’ll just run the lights at night :night_with_stars:, which is what we did before :+1:

Supposed to be even hotter tomorrow, so I don’t want to blow it up before it’s done :+1:

Wait a couple days, will be more normal temps, then we’ll see :see_no_evil_monkey:

Okie dokie :ok_button:, it’s test day!

Weather is going to be sunny and nice :+1:, more like it should be

Got all the lights on max, I’ve got both of the sensors in there, one at each end.

It’s 0900, we’ll check on it at noon :twelve_o_clock:, see how it’s holding. I’m not running the humidity, that’s normally not an issue, we’ll address that when the need presents itself.

Cross your fingers :crossed_fingers: :face_with_peeking_eye:

The room looks amazing. I am holding thumbs that the testing works.

It immediately jumped up to, and leveled out at 81, the AC just kicked on, so we’ll see if it holds at 81, may need to make some adjustments

That’s not bad, I expected it to jump up, the question is :red_question_mark::red_question_mark: can we hold what we got? Cool it off? Or will the heat take over?

That’s what these tests are for!

1100, still sitting on 81

Getting into the hottest part of the day now ,

I see a problem with the math :face_with_monocle:,

Let’s whip out the calculator,

The two 4x5 lights completely fill the 100-square-foot room with intense heat. Because the footprint of the lights matches the exact square footage of the space, the heat density is incredibly high.

Why the Current AC is Failing

A standard 5,000 BTU AC is designed to cool passive rooms, like bedrooms. It cannot handle an active commercial-grade heat load.

  • The Reality: the lights dump 4,433 BTUs of heat into the room every hour.
  • The Struggle: the 5,000 BTU AC only has 567 BTUs left over to cool the walls, the air, and the plants.
  • The Result: The room stays hot, and the AC will eventually burn out from running 24/7 without stopping.

Exact Sizing Requirements

To properly cool a 100-square-foot grow room with 1,300 watts of lighting, we need to step up our cooling power significantly.

  • The Target: we will need 10,000 BTUs just to break even and lower the temperature slightly.
  • The Ideal Choice: An 11,000 to 12,000 BTU unit is highly recommended.

An oversized unit is mandatory here. It allows the AC to cycle off occasionally, handles the high humidity generated by plants, and ensures the room hits the target day/night temperature :face_with_thermometer:

Two options have presented themselves, replace the AC with a larger unit, run the lights at night when daytime temperature is above 80.

Our target daytime temperature is 78. So we are just hovering slightly above where we want to be. Still got a few hours to go.

1300hrs, still holding :+1: :tada:.

Although it’s a few degrees above where we want it, it’s holding.

The air is really drying out, I’m going to fire up the humidity, see if we can get back up to 55 60.

We’ll let it run another hour or two, then see where we are. I want to shut the lights off next, about 230, 1430,

Then see how much we can cool it down by about 1530, 330. If we can knock it back down to say 70:thinking:.

1400, still holding at 81, humidity is coming up.

This test will continue, but my mother has fallen, gots a nasty cut on her calf that will probably need to be stitched.

I’ll have @SweetBuds keep an eye on it :+1:

1500hrs

Mom’s good , well, :thinking:at least she was when I dumped her out,:joy::joy:

@SweetBuds got a handle on it now :grinning_cat_with_smiling_eyes:

One of the great things about small town, “hey doc! I did it again :joy:”, c’mon in, let’s take a look.

No ER visit, no appointment, just good ole fashioned doctoring :+1:

So, while that’s going on, I’m back at the house now and it’s still looking good

The humidity is coming up :+1: :clinking_beer_mugs:, temperature is holding :+1: :tada:

Now it’s a little bit warm, but, it’s hot outside too.

Although it’s not perfect, yet:thinking: with a few minor tweaks, we’ll be good.

Here’s what we learned so far.

We will need to run the lights at night during the summer months, no big deal :handshake:, that’s how we were doing it before. In order to effectively control the heat, we will need a bigger AC unit.

:face_with_head_bandage: Ouch,

Now the good news :clinking_beer_mugs::tada::+1:

Notice that there isn’t very much variation between the 2, one sensor is in one corner on top of the bucket, the other is hanging between, and 16 inches below the lights on the opposite side, and end.

Everything is working very well :+1:, just need to get a little bit more cooling for daytime lighted growing. For now, we grow at night!! Moonshine Weed :potted_plant: :+1:

I just shut the lights off, we’ll see how cool we can get by 4, we will lose the sun about then, and it will cool down anyway.

Once we get it cooled, at about 1900, 7pm.

We’ll kick it back on and test it at night :night_with_stars:

Let’s go flip the switch and see if we can maintain it at our target 78:cat_face:

Working on 2030, it’s holding beautifully, in fact, it’s a little cool , the lights coming on has sucked up the humidity, we can adjust that :+1:

My only real concern during this whole test was how well we can control the heat and check for good air circulation.

We have achieved our goal :lacrosse: :goal_net:.

Our temperature and humidity is even from the top of our bucket to within a foot :foot: of the lights. From one end of the grow room to the other.

That’s freakin awesome :100: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: :mate:, we have excellent air circulation and we don’t even have the fans in yet.

With the testing completed. The next step is plumbing :mechanic::factory_worker: we have to connect all the circulation pipe, install the water pump, air pump, insulation and build a cabinet, work out the frame work for the nets. Still need the :seal: seal around the door :door:, and at least 3 other things that I can’t seem to remember :joy::joy:

But for now , we celebrate  :clinking_glasses: :clinking_glasses:
