Starting with my first attempt at growing my own

I hope you don’t mind my questions, but I could use some advice. I am starting seeds today, hopefully.
Should I soak the seeds first? If so, how long?

I want to start the seeds in peat pots so I can move them into my garage when it gets cold, and out into the sun to harden them before planting outside in June. With garden seeds, I only fill the peat pots 1/2 full so I can add more substrate for support if the seedlings get too leggy. I also keep the pots in containers so I can add water to the container and let the plants drink from underneath. Is this OK?

My soil is mostly sand so I plan to auger a 12" dia. hole X 24" deep for each plant. I will fill it with a mix of coir, peat moss, compost, perlite, and topsoil when I plant the potted seedlings.

They will all be planted close to my garden where they can get full sun and water from my garden sprinklers. As crazy as the weather can be in the Spring, we usually have good growing conditions here, and Autumn frost usually doesn’t hit us until mid-October.

After I have everything planted outside and established, I will need to add nutrients and learn the trimming and shaping techniques, but I’ll deal with that later.

Please give any advice or suggestions, or Do’s and Don’ts you think will help.

Welcome @Sativabound great to have you here! This is a great thread to check out, lots of lessons and knowledge shared here – Sharing Lessons Learnt

Just tagging a few helpful members here that will have your back. @Tattoodaddyo420 @og_growgirl_sfv @MrNice any advice for our new friend?

What am I? Chopped liver?

My humblest of apologies Sir :joy:

I recommend the cannakan:

or the paper towel method:

How to Germinate Weed Seeds (Paper Towel Method) | Grow Weed Easy

Just get them germinated first. Then worry about the rest later. It’s a plant that grows wild. Don’t overthink it and don’t overdo it. Have a questions need advice, you’re in the right place

Yank humor, that.^

Yer yer I got you haha.

Hope you got the British sarcasm

Hi @Sativabound and welcome to the community!

I agree with @SweetsensiWA , get them germinated.

Old school method: drop them in a shot glass of water for 12-24 hours, then move that to a paper towel to finish it out. Once they have 1/2" tails, drop them into your peat and let them grow.

Modern method: CannaKan. This covers both the soak and paper towel in one process. Again, once they have 1/2" tails, drop them into your peat and let them grow.

I hope this help answer your question!

Welcome, you are in the right place lots of helpful people here happy to answer any questions.

I soak for 24 hours, if they are fresh they usually pop in the water and I plant directly. If they haven’t popped in 24hr you can use a wet paper towel to make sure they will before planting.
What you do with other seedlings will work fine. Give them a pot each and 3/4 fill, the tap root wants at least a few inches of room to grow down, can top up later if they get leggy.
Bottom watering is fine but don’t want soil too wet when first sprouting. Prep and water the pots when you put the seeds to soak, then you probably won’t need to water again until the seed has sprouted and broken the surface.

The easiest fert would be a slow release organic amendment like Gaia Green All Purpose 4-4-4 and Power Bloom 2-8-4 mixed into the hole on planting and top dressed.

{DELETED} Oops! I’m one of those damn newbies on this forum. I’ll figure it out.

Lol. You’re fine, welcome to the community! It takes some figuring out. Have fun!

WOW! Some of my pepper seeds take 3-4 weeks to germinate. I soak and germinate seeds in my utility room where the water heater and furnace are. The room stays between 75-80 most of the day.

Sounds like solid advice, thank you.

You’ll figure it out pretty quick no doubt.

There should be guides to most simple bits in the Welcome to Seedsman Community category.

This thread should be helpful: How to use the Seedsman Community

Thanks all for hopping in for the warm welcome.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend

You guys too!

Any of the above mentioned work fine. I use a LetPot seed starter kit It does a really good job with organic seed starter plugs for organiplugs (ventana plant science). If using photoperiod seeds you can just let them grow till you want to transplant and autos you need to watch the root growth to tell when to transplant
