Hello all! Just curious to hear from some of the growers about what the benefits of 5 gallon vs 3 gallon. I know of the old saying more root equals more fruit but what else is true? I mostly grow in 3 gallon bags with a 4×2×5 and a 3×3×5.
For me it depends on medium. I prefer 5gal+ for ‘living’ soil. Less is often better with soluble fertilizer as easier to control the dry back, I like 2gals for coco.
I’m using a blend of fox farms ocean forest and happy frog. About 50/50 mix but sometimes more happy frog than ocean forest.
Imo not a whole lot besides space! 5gal will hold moisture lil longer.
It really depends on your growing medium. If live organic soil, bigger is better. If coco coir/ perlite mix you could go a little smaller if using synthetic fertilizer. Generally if your roots are happy the plant is too.
Yeah I might try 5 gallons on my next run and compare the difference. I’m currently using a blend of fox farms happy frog and ocean forest
I believe medium, watering method and size of plant dictate the best size container.
For me in Readygro ariation with big plants using drip system @ 9 fertigations daily I use 3 gal pots.
I like to use several short timed intervals to achieve field saturation then dry back to around 80%.
Maintain that with a couple pulses thru the day then dry back to about 50% overnight.
