Jim's Story | Finding Purpose in the Garden

For Jim Sandling, the journey into cultivation began in 2021 with a gift from his Uma.

“My story begins in 2021 when my Uma blessed myself along with my cousins with a hefty amount of money,” Jim recalls. “I spent most of it on grow equipment.”

The purchase was a Mars Hydro 4x4 grow tent kit, which Jim set up in the bedroom he shared with his girlfriend at the time – the woman who is now his wife.

“She was looking at me really funny,” he laughs.

That small bedroom grow would quietly set the stage for years of learning, experimentation, and reflection. At the time, Jim was transitioning into a more responsible adult, and cultivation would soon become a meaningful way to explore focus, discipline, and creativity.

Finding Purpose in the Plant

What drew Jim to cultivation in the first place was a mix of curiosity and practicality. “After receiving the blessing in the form of money from my Umas, I had the mindset at first to save money, but it turned into more of a hobby over time,” he explains.

"I enjoy being able to go from seed to rosin now. It is a beautiful thing."

Outside of the garden, Jim’s life is shaped by family, health, personal growth, and faith. “I spend as much of my time as I can on self-improvement and family. I am blessed with an amazing wife and wonderful children. “

The Experience of Growing

Cultivation has become a daily activity for Jim.

“I run home on my lunch break and check the ladies and then at night as well. I spend about one hour in my garden a day.”

That time, he says, is both grounding and rewarding. “Sometimes I dread a task needed done but I once I accomplish whatever it is I am doing in the grow, nothing is better.”

His interest has deepened into genetics and breeding. “Believe it or not, it helps me understand creation. I am no into the genetics side and creating my own genetics and looking at how two parents create so many different pheno and genotypes, the same as humans do when they are blessed with children.”

Challenges have shaped his practice. When asked about those challenges in the garden, Jim points to one issue that helped him learn. “Pests, for sure. I have learned IPM and will always make sure to incorporate that into my grows. It is so necessary,“ he notes, along with cleanliness, stating that the two go hand in hand.

Growing has also inspired new ambitions, including a wider focus on horticulture.

“This year I am going to start my first vegetable garden and also one day hope to farm even if it is small scale.”

It’s obvious that Jim has found life enrichment through gardening, and he admits it has shaped who he has become as a person. Over time, growing stopped feeling like a hobby and started to feel like identity. “This is me. I am a farmer/cultivator, grower – whatever you want to call me,” he admits.

Seedsman and Community

As Jim’s growing knowledge expanded, so did his connection to the wider cannabis community. When asked about Seedsman’s impact on his work, Jim speaks with customary gratitude. “I am blessed to have met Tom, the owner, through posting a review of the Seedsman Banana Jealousy strain which later led to my employment with Seedsman. Seedsman is my role now, not just something that played a part.”

Selecting reliable genetics has also been a learning curve. On strains, Jim admits that how he chooses genetics has now changed from his early method.

“At first, it was what had the best pictures and sounded the best to me. I still have not really found the perfect terpene profile for myself but also cannot complain with most strains I grow."

But as Jim’s cultivation journey unfolds, he has come to appreciate the true value of Seedsman’s stable genetics.

“Having reliable genetics is huge in growing,” he adds.

Enriching Life

For Jim, cultivation has enriched life in more ways than simply earning successful harvests. “During my growing journey, I have learned patience, focus, and gratitude. It has really been a blessing in my life.” He explains the meaning of Enrich Life in simple, practical terms. “It means to better it. When something is enriched, it means to improve it.” For Jim, growing is part of that improvement – a daily reminder that attention, care, and dedication can produce something meaningful, both in the garden and beyond.

That philosophy is all-encompassing, even spreading to self-belief. Jim is a firm believer that cultivation is something anyone can become proficient at if the desire is there. He has advice for anyone considering starting their own growing journey.

“Go for it, do not let the internet tell you that you aren’t doing good enough.”

Growing is not just about plants – it’s personal, too. For Jim, it rewards curiosity and patience, and brings the joy of seeing something flourish under your care. Each seed planted is a small lesson in focus, consistency, and resilience. Each harvest is a reminder of what dedication can achieve.

Whether it’s experimenting with genetics, managing a healthy environment, or simply spending quiet moments in the garden, cultivation has become a way for Jim to enrich life every day – for himself, his family, and the community of growers who share in the journey.
