Every single part of the cannabis plant can be used for something. Instead of throwing away the leftovers after harvest, people can use the entire plant to make medicine, food, clothes, and garden soil.
Here is how each part of the plant is used:
1. The Flowers and Sugar Leaves: the flowers (buds) and the tiny leaves around them (sugar leaves) are the most famous parts of the plant. The Buds: These contain the highest amount of chemicals like THC and CBD. People dry them to use as medicine or for relaxation. The Sugar Leaves: These leaves are sticky with resin. People use them to make concentrated oils, concentrates, or butter for cooking.
2. The Fan Leaves: Fan leaves are the large, iconic leaves that look like a hand. They do not have enough chemical power to get you high, but they are very healthy. Food and Drinks: They are full of vitamins and fiber. People put them into raw green smoothies, salads, or steep them in hot water to make herbal tea. Gardening: They make great food for the soil. Growers toss them into compost piles to help future plants grow.
3. The Stalks and Stems: The long, tough stems act like the bones of the plant. They are packed with strong fibers. Rope and Clothes: The outer skin of the stem can be woven into super strong rope, paper, and fabric for clothing. Building Houses: The woody inside of the stem can be mixed with lime and water to create “hempcrete,” a natural building block used to make eco-friendly houses.
4. The Roots: The roots grow deep underground. They do not contain any THC or CBD, but they have unique properties that help soothe the body. Skin Creams: People wash the dirt off the roots, dry them completely, and grind them into a powder. Healing Salves: This powder is mixed into oils and waxes to make rubbing creams that help soothe sore muscles and skin burns.
