I’ve been dabbling in and out of growing since the 70s, and a few things I’ve learned is there is no “correct” way to grow. By that I mean if you ask 100 people, you’ll get 100 different answers. Truth is, there’s many correct ways to do it.
From big photo outdoor plants to little solo cup autos. Dirt, moss, hydro, you name it. The trick is to find what works for you, on your budget and available resources.

Yes, it’s not about fancy names or brands. Grow with what you have, be creative. The homemade canna kan is cool.
