Are You Gonna Smoke That Or What? - My Story

My journey started back in the early 80’s when my friends and I were getting intrigued by indoor growing via High Times magazine. None of us had a place to do it cos we all still lived with our parents (we were around 18), but my friend’s sister had an apartment and agreed we could use her closet. We didn’t have $ for the lights advertised in the magazine, so we decided to just get some full spectrum fluorescents. The experiment worked in that we got some plants passed the seedling stage, but then she decided she was going to move so we never got to finish them

Flash forward some years and I had my own place, an HPS I got from Home Depot, and some Skunk #1 seeds I bought in Amsterdam, and it was time to give it another shot. Everything went pretty well but my setup was… pretty lacking. It was literally the light hung in the closet above a five gallon cat litter bucket with the plant. I had no idea about stretch or training, so when I finally flipped to flower, I panicked cos it was getting really tall! In any case, I finally had some decent looking and smelling bud (although not much of it), AND it actually got you high! Needless to say (but I’m saying it), I was hooked.

As years past, I upgraded to an LED when those became easier to get. Started with a blurple, then the more common ones we have now (I still use the blurple for seedlings). Being able to get seeds thru the mail had gotten a little easier, so that prompted me to try it again.

I guess this is a good time to point out I’m in the hobby grower category and a recreational user — and a lightweight one at that. To put it mildly, an ounce could easily last me almost a year (feel free to laugh here). As a result, I usually never grow more than three plants at a time, so ending up with 4-5 ounces is considered a win for me. Let me mention, it’s also a win for my friends cos I end up giving so much of it away. As one friend put it, “you like to grow it more than you like to smoke it” —can’t argue with the reality of that.

As far as what brought me to Seedsman, I’d seen others mention the site, and I just love the ‘one stop shop’ of it all. Choosing strains for me is usually just a result of endless scanning of strain names, pictures, and Indica vs. Sativa traits (I lean toward Sativas or hybrids). I’ve messed with autos for fun, and really enjoy the quick turnaround, but I do love the way you can really mess around with photos as far as training, yield, etc. It’s so much fun to grow because it’s a fast plant and can change so much from week to week so it never gets boring. Plus there’s the added reward of the outcome when all is said and done. Having friends comment on how much they enjoy what I grew is something I never get tired of.

I usually only grow once every 1-2 years for the reasons mentioned above, but nothing gets me in the mood to do it again more than looking at YT vids of grows, and seeing everyone’s pictures and experiences here. I love the idea of this community for that reason alone, along with the many friendly folks of all skill levels sharing their knowledge. Everyone’s stories are so different, yet we all have the love of growing in common. Thanks for reading!
