Continued cultivation diary of the 1998 F4 Blueberry (fem) started in Old School Genetics Lounge.
Day 16 update: I swapped out the first base for the self-watering base with the wicks and used 0 PPM filtered water with some cal-mag, organic phytoplankton, potassium silicate, and microbial mass, and measured out to about 268 PPM/(0.54 EC on the 500 scale or 0.38 on the 700, im not sure which mime is, but I’ve read to keep it between 0.1 and 0.8 EC for living soil, please correct me if I’m wrong) and 6.55 pH. I will continue to use potassium silicate as pH up and the cal-mag and plankton to raise PPM, but will only use microbial mass every 2 weeks at most. I’ve also trimmed some of the clover that was in the center and around the thicker edges and roughly planted some seed mix containing lentils, red clover, alfalfa, radish, and mustard, just to try and get some variety going. Everything trimmed is being recycled back into the soil, and have a little composting bin for the overflow that once it’s warm enough to keep outside will be full of worms to help break it down. Now hopefully with the self-watering base on she’ll take off in the next couple weeks and I can start topping and training to make the most out of this 2x2 tent.
Have you tried using Eleanor VF 11 and oilcan cal mag for adjusting ph? That brand of cal mag has humic acid and sulfur as well. Sulfur helps bring out the thiols. We also use cold pressed kelp extract. It stinks, but really good stuff, I use on seedings for transplanting.
No problem, I like that you put cover crop on your plants. I’ve read that some cover crop will help deter pests from the plant or even repel them entirely. Or grow some other edibles too.
Don’t really need more than 5gal. Unless running living soil. But if having trouble over watering a 5gal will let u get bye every 2/3 day! 3gal will grow monsters it’s what I use
Yeah that’s what i use as well but I’m still fine tuning getting the monsters part lol. But thanks to guys like you i can get pointed in the right direction. Helps take alot of the stress out so that helps calm my mind too
Day 22 update: The thing I love about photoperiods, is you’ ve got all the time in the world to correct any problems and bring her back to it’s full potential, lol. I raised the light intensity yesterday to bring the PPFD up to 450 in the center, and around 420 on the edges. I have been misting the leafs when opening the tent to the much dryer room but I read that might not be a good thing and to only foliar spray ever 2 days at most so Ill try to stick to that going forward. I started to very lightly train by just moving top leaves to expose some of the lower growth. For the next couple weeks I’ll be more hands off and open the tent as little as possible, only to check on refilling the base. I also trimmed a bit of cover crops to make her some breathing room. As of now I’ll just keep measuring everything within range for each stage of growth for living soil and let it stabilize itself. Although I’m open to any tips that could help her lift off. Have an awesome 4/20 everybody!
Soil is too wet, and looks like too much Nitrogen in your mix. Probably grow out of it when it gets bigger but I’d stop bottom watering until the plant has rooted the pot more.
It’s weird though for nitrogen because it’s almost 50/50 happy frog/promix HP so it should be low, if anything, and for the water I only added enough nutrients to bring the ppm up from zero to the lower end of the recommended range. For the soil, I haven’t top watered for at least 6 days since I swapped the base and I’m fairly certain she’s been drinking from the bottom for at least a few days I can feel the water wicked up pretty much to the top now where I was watching the dampness level rise slowly and feeling the fabric over the last week where it was dry on the outside of the planter. And I really can’t think of anything that would have caused the excess in nitrogen. I really appreciate the help trying to figure it out. I agree with the nitrogen, but the self watering base I only filled it once, then topped it off 1 time when ~1/3 was gone, then nothing since, and right now it’s down to 1/2 full (1.3 gallons capacity). The top soil has small patches of dry dirt at the very top, and the rest is just damp enough that it feels like it’s at just the right level before being too dry. I’m also fighting 35% RH in the room so I’ve been stupidly spraying it every time I opened the tent, (still adjusting my cloudforge humidifier every other day) and put only enough nutrients in the water to reach ~130 PPM. For now I’ll just let the base go dry, then see where we’re at.Thanks for the feedback!
So I ended up taking the self watering base out to dry back the soil like you recommended and reintroduced some oxygen. It totally makes sense and seems so obvious to me now. It took a few hours for my brain to fully understand and grasp the idea lol. Side note, there are already some roots popping out of the bottom of the planter and they look white and healthy. I’ll update with pics in a day or 2.
Update, day 26: Base needs another day or 2 to dry back. Growth is still very slow, but still going. I trimmed some more cover crops, the clovers were just taking over like crazy lol. I also moved up the humidifier hose and turned it down since I thought the close proximity might also have contributed to the leaf problems. Lastly, I can see the Peyote WIFI seedling just barely starting to poke out the soil so I’ll most likely get day 1 pics later on to share as well. That’s it for today! Enjoy your Friday everyone!
Seedsman Peyote WIFI,description: “Peyote Wi-Fi is a cross of Peyote Purple and Wi-Fi, the former being a colourful selection of Bubba Kush. It is a medium-sized indica-type plant with large, wide leaves. This is a high-yielding plant both indoors and outdoors and produces loads of resin making it very good for extract making. THC levels are between 20 - 26% with less than 1% CBD.”

I say this with every new seed, but I’m really excited for this one! I received it as a freebie with one of my orders and was totally mesmerized by the pitch black leaves from their picture (above), and the strain lineage going back is all heavy kushy goodness, so I had to try it out. I couldn’t wait to plant it, so I finally decided to fit in a 3gal with the 5 gallon thats already in the 2x2. I started this seed between a damp paper towel inside of a sandwich bag. After almost 4 days I opened it to see about a 1/4 inch taproot and planted it in a cut out coffee cup with drainage holes, filled with the contents of 2 rehydrated peat pellets with 6.2 pH’d water at 130 PPM, from cal-mag, plankton, and potassium silicate. 2 days later and we have day 1 from sprout:
