William Coffren’s journey as a grower began in July 2021, when recreational cannabis became legal in Virginia. After more than 20 years running a landscape company, he saw an opportunity merge his professional plant knowledge with a personal passion.
“I was drawn in by the science of growth, the differences between strains, and the creativity that comes with training and shaping each plant,” he explains. What started as curiosity quickly evolved into craft. Cultivation became more than a hobby – it became a dedicated pursuit.
Landscaping had already given William a deep respect for nature, design, and hard work. That foundation translated naturally to growing cannabis. “Cultivation felt like a natural next step,” he says. Every seed, every bend of a branch, every carefully monitored nutrient feed became a reflection of his lifelong connection to plants.
The Outdoors as Inspiration
Growing is inseparable from William’s love of the outdoors. He has lived in Virginia Beach, VA, his entire life and spends much of it kayaking, golfing, camping, fishing, and gardening.
“The outdoors has always given me a sense of calm, direction and connection, and growing has amplified that feeling even more,” he reflects.
Family and music are constants in his life, but its the rhythm of the plants that provides clarity.
A Routine of Care and Focus
Horticulture is now woven into William’s daily routine. Checking the reservoir, training plants, mixing nutrients, and balancing conditions are part of every day. For him, growing is a way to relax and recharge.
“It’s my alone time, a space where I can focus on the process, think about life, and find clarity.”
That time spent tending to his garden leaves him feeling proud, relaxed, and ready to face whatever comes next. “Every harvest is a reminder of what patience and attention can achieve.”
Lessons Beyond the Leaves
Over time, William has found that the garden teaches lessons far beyond horticulture. “It’s shown me the power of consistency, patience, and followthrough,” he says. Every effort in the grow – from perfecting the environment to carefully observing plant responses – translates into tangible quality and satisfaction.
Challenges are part of the process and William embraces them. “Dealing with pH swings, pests, and environmental shifts taught me to stay calm, adapt quickly, and think ahead,” he reflects. Each obstacle is a chance to learn, and every success reinforces the value of care. Cultivation, for him, mirrors a mindset: steady, patient, and always improving. “It’s both an outlet and a teacher, reminding me that growth takes time, persistence and care whether it’s a plant or a person.”
Exploring Genetics and Creativity
William finds joy in exploring the potential of different strains. “I enjoy working with different strains to see how each responds to training and care, exploring unique flavours, aromas, and growth patterns,” he says. Every new seed presents an opportunity to learn and refine his skills, blending science with creativity.
Yet even the most experienced growers value guidance and connection. William draws on online grow groups, local cultivators, and research to expand his knowledge.
“Sharing ideas keeps me connected with others who love the same craft – people who understand that growing is both a science and an art,” he says.
The Seedsman Foundation
Seedsman has been a pivotal part of William’s journey, as the first company he purchased from. “Their wide variety, reliability, and in-depth seeds information made a huge difference when I was starting out,” he recalls. Access to quality genetics and knowledge gave him the confidence to experiment, turning curiosity into skill, and skill into passion.
Patience, Pride, and Reward
Growing has taught William lessons that extend beyond plants. “It’s a reminder that real reward comes from dedication – from showing up every day, adapting when things go wrong, and finding joy in the small victories,” he explains.
Through the process, William has cultivated more than cannabis; he has cultivated himself.
“My plants have become my teachers, showing me that growth is never instant, but always worth the work,” he reflects.
With every harvest, he is reminded that the act of growing – tending, observing, and learning – enriches life in ways that extend far beyond the garden.
